Chilean fishmeal, fish oil plants permitted to export to China

27 fishmealand fish oil facilities in Chile have gained approval for export to China after the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the Popular Republic of China (AQSIQ) expressed satisfaction over sanitary control systems implemented there.

Following an inspection period between mid-April and early May this year, AQSIQ noted that Chile"has established a series of measures for monitoring, verification and surveillance of waste, issuing certificates, etc., to ensure that the supervision is effective," according to the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) which sets the control systems in place.

AQSIQ also praised the level of cooperation demonstrated by SERNAPESCA and heads of plants in helping Chinese delegations to successfully complete inspections.

Jose Miguel Burgos, the national director of SERNAPESCA, welcomed the positive assessment provided by AQSIQ.

"This shows that Chile is constantly working to raise the health standards of their fisheries and aquaculture industry, allowing it to access to such large and important markets as China," Burgos said. "This favourable assessment gives us an excellent precedent and puts us in a very good start to open up the Asian market to other domestic fish products."

In the meantime, three other Chilean plants await final approvals, but not before receiving supervision from SERNAPESCA.
